Immunodeficiency (inadequate immune system)

There are a number of conditions in which the immune system is not able to mount an effective defense against infections. The end result isrecurring infections. These infections may be bacterial, viral, or fungal. They may occur in the blood, sinuses, lungs, as well as the intestinal tract. According to the World Health Organization, there are at least 150 primary immunodeficiency diseases.

You should be suspicious about the presence of an immunodeficiency if the infections are severe, involve more than a small portion of the lungs, occur with atypical organisms, or fail to clear despite therapy, are within the blood, and/or require hospitalization. Your BVAAC board-certified allergist has received specialized training in the recognition and management of immunodeficiencies, including the use of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) if clinically indicated.

If you or your family have any questions about immunodeficiencies, or you want to schedule an appointment, call us at 208-378-0080 or click here to make an appointment request online.
